Will my insurance cover therapy?

Many New York plans must — but it depends on one thing most parents have never been asked.

The state mandate applies to fully insured plans, not to self-funded employer plans. The card in your wallet looks the same either way. Call HR and ask: "Is our health plan fully insured or self-funded?"

Do this week

  1. Call the number on your insurance card and ask one question: is our plan fully insured or self-funded?
  2. Write down the answer, the date, and the name of the person who gave it to you.
  3. If the answer is self-funded, that is not the end of it. Call Advocates for Children of New York or Disability Rights New York.
