What happens when my child turns 5?

Preschool services hand off to school-age services, and it is the most common place families lose ground.

New committee, different eligibility criteria, new paperwork. Watch for the notice between December and August — and if nothing has arrived by February 1, call the CSE for your home district yourself.

Do this week

  1. Put February 1 on your calendar now. If no notice has arrived by then, call the CSE office for the district where you live.
  2. Ask for the date of the Turning 5 meeting in writing.
  3. Read the eligibility warning on this page before the meeting. Preschool eligibility does not carry over on its own — school-age uses different criteria.
