English isn't my first language. Can I get help?

Yes. An interpreter at meetings and a translated IEP are both rights, on request.

You should never be asked to bring your own interpreter, and your child should never be used as your interpreter. Request an interpreter in writing at least 72 hours before a meeting — there's a free letter tool on this page that writes it for you in nine languages.

Do this week

  1. Ask for an interpreter at least 72 hours before the meeting, in writing.
  2. Request the translated IEP at schools.nyc.gov/IEPHello or 718-935-2013.
  3. You do not have to bring your own interpreter, and your child should not be asked to be one.
