When it isn't working

I disagree with what the school decided.

You have real options — an independent evaluation, mediation, or an impartial hearing.

You do not have to accept a decision you think is wrong, and you do not have to know which route to take before you ask for help. Call a free advocate before you sign anything you are unsure about.

Do this week

  1. Ask for the decision in writing. The document is called Prior Written Notice.
  2. Write down what you disagree with, in one or two sentences, while it is fresh.
  3. Call Advocates for Children of New York or Disability Rights New York before you choose a route. Both are free, and both do this every day.
