Just starting out

How do I actually ask? Do I call someone?

Put it in writing. A verbal request to a teacher is not a referral.

Write to the CSE or CPSE office that serves your district — a short letter saying who your child is and why you are asking. Keep a dated copy of everything you send. If you hand it in at the school, ask them to date-stamp your copy.

Do this week

  1. Write the letter. Your child's full name, date of birth, the school or program, and one or two sentences on why you are asking.
  2. Address it to the CSE or CPSE office that serves your district. The office list is on the NYC Public Schools special education page.
  3. Send it so you have proof, and keep a dated copy of exactly what you sent.
  4. Write down the date you sign consent. That signature, not the letter, starts the 60 calendar days.
