Does the evaluation cost me anything?

No. An evaluation by the school district is free to you.

The same is true of Early Intervention for children under 3. If someone is asking you to pay for an evaluation, that is a private evaluation — a different thing, and sometimes useful, but not the one the district owes you.

Do this week

  1. Ask for the district evaluation in writing. It is free to you.
  2. If someone asks you for money, ask them one question: is this a district evaluation or a private one?
  3. If you are being asked to pay for a district evaluation, call Advocates for Children of New York. It is free.
