School and placement

Can my autistic child go to a regular school?

Yes — and under federal law that's the starting point, not the exception.

Least Restrictive Environment means the question isn't whether your child has earned a general education classroom. It's whether anyone can justify moving her out of one. Most children with disabilities in this city attend their ordinary neighborhood school.

Do this week

  1. Write your question down in the words the law uses: what is the reason for placing my child outside general education?
  2. Ask for that reason in writing. The document is called Prior Written Notice.
  3. Read the continuum before the meeting so you know the names of the settings that sit between general education and District 75.
